Home Video Roundup

Welcome back to my monthly (ish) home video roundup. There is plenty to find at your local store, or wherever you purchase your physical media. From a classic musical for the whole family to the dark and brooding The Batman. First up,

Singin’ In The Rain

This highly acclaimed musical film has since spurned a stage musical of the same name and countless awards and accolades, with its titular song often landing on top 100 lists. The passion and the love for this film has lasted decades and for the first time, you can own it on 4K UHD. This is a must-have upgrade for your collection with a crisp and absolutely stunning transfer. This title is available now.

This edition contains the following previously released special features:

  • Commentary by Debbie Reynold, Donald O’Connor, Cyd Charisse, Kathleen Freeman, Stanley Donen, Betty Camden, Adolph Green, Baz Lurhmann, and Rudy Behlmer.
  • Singin’ in the Rain: Raining on a New Generation Documentary
  • Theatrical Trailer

Next, is the surprisingly heartfelt and funny DOG.

While the title is lacking any depth, the film itself is the buddy comedy you never knew you wanted. Co-written, co-directed, and starring Channing Tatum, this obvious passion project has the right amount of heart and emotion for a satisfying experience. Unfortunately, the are no special features on this release. DOG is available everywhere.

Licorice Pizza

The three-time Academy Award-nominated film arrives on Bluray and DVD from MGM and Universal on May 17th. Starring Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman, Licorice Pizza is one of the year’s best films. Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s 9th film dives into a slice-of-life view in the San Fernando Valley, reminiscent of American Graffiti and Dazed and Confused, this coming of age tale features two great acting debuts as well as an all-star ensemble cast featuring Tom Waits, Sean Penn, Bradley Copper, and Benny Safdie.

The Bluray and DVD come with a limited-edition poster and double-sided cover art. In addition to the artwork, the film boasts a myriad of bonus features and in-universe commercials:

  • Camera Tests – Pre-production camera tests and unused takes
  • The Handman Scene – Deleted Scene
  • Fat Bernie’s Commercial – An in-universe commercial for Fat Bernie’s as shot by Gary Valentine

The Batman

Coming to 4K, Bluray and DVD on May 24th is Warner Bros. newest incarnation of Batman. This time it is Robert Pattison under the cawl, showing the Caped Crusador a year into his new identity and utilizing more of his detective skills to bring justice to Gotham City. Featuring a stellar ensemble cast with, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, John Turturro, and Paul Dano all of which turn in great performances and enhance this darker incarnation. I was only able to review the Bluray, the transfer here is superb, one can only imagine the quality of the 4K.
